The origins of Salnerhof

Salnerhof is inextricably linked to the development of Ischgl. Our family has lived in the Paznaun valley for generations and is deeply rooted in the region. What began as a simple, traditional business has been built up over the decades through hard work and perseverance. Step by step, the hotel took shape, always in step with Ischgl’s transformation from a tranquil mountain village into one of the Alps’ most famous ski resorts.
In the 1960s, Josef Salner senior and his wife Christina decided to strike out on their own. They took the plunge into the tourism industry, which was still in its infancy in the valley at the time. Together, they started a family and, with their five children at the heart of it all, laid the foundations for the hotel as it stands today – through hard work and a clear vision.

1964 – The ground-breaking ceremony

Josef Salner Senior built Ischgl’s first petrol station, which was attached to a small restaurant. The hole for the foundations was dug entirely by hand using shovels and pickaxes. On 10 December, the doors opened to the first guests; at that time, there were just 20 cosy seats.

1980 – The birth of the hotel

That small petrol station and restaurant laid the foundations for what is now Salnerhof. A top-class 4-star hotel with 60 beds and the first in-house wellness area. Shortly afterwards, the first two-storey underground car park in Ischgl was built.

2000 – The major transformation

The hotel underwent extensive renovation and was prepared for the new millennium. A completely new entrance area, an inviting hotel lobby with a bar, a new dining room, and state-of-the-art infrastructure behind the scenes were created.

2019 – Investment in the team

The Salner team resort, featuring modern apartments and single rooms, was built in Ischgl. A real home for our staff, who give their all every day.

2026 – The start of a new era

The starting signal for one of the most extensive refurbishments in recent history. The entire ground floor – from the reception, through the lobby and the bar to the restaurant – has been completely reimagined, redesigned, and refurbished. A new, spacious ski storage room is now available to ensure maximum convenience.

A lot has changed over the decades. The small business has become an exclusive hotel. Yet the genuine joy we take in our work and our commitment to craftsmanship are still as much a part of life at Salnerhof as they were on day one.

The house has been passed down from generation to generation, continuously extended and carefully adapted to modern times. Every era has left its own mark and made Salnerhof what it is today: a traditional yet modern retreat right in the heart of the village.
