The drive into the Paznaun valley feels like a slow crescendo. With every kilometre, the hills recede and the peaks draw nearer. As you emerge from the tunnel and catch your first glimpse of the valley, you’ll feel: this is where my holiday begins. By car

Bends, tunnels, anticipation

Travelling by car is the most flexible option and offers the best opportunities for breaks. Take the Inntal motorway to Landeck, then turn off into the Paznaun valley. The road to Ischgl winds along for around 20 kilometres, and as the mountains grow taller, the anticipation of arriving at Salnerhof rises in direct proportion.

An important note for winter travellers:
The Silvretta High Alpine Road is closed in winter. Please plan your journey accordingly.

Things to bear in mind before setting off

A few practical tips to make your journey even more relaxed:

Tolls and vignettes. You will need a vignette to drive on Austrian motorways. These are available at petrol stations before the border or digitally via asfinag.at. The route from Landeck to Ischgl is toll-free.
E-charging stations. Visitors travelling by electric vehicle will find charging points in Landeck and directly in Ischgl. At Salnerhof, our underground car park with electric charging points is available for your use (for a fee).
Check-in and car park. Check-in from 3 p.m. The underground car park is monitored by CCTV and heated.
Check the weather before setting off. A quick look at the webcam will show you what to expect. That way, you know which jacket to pack in your hand luggage.

By train: a relaxed journey, a relaxed arrival

There’s something about travelling by train that helps you slow down, especially when the Alps are gliding past the carriage windows. You can travel via Innsbruck or from Vorarlberg to Landeck-Zams. From there, it’s another 20 kilometres to Ischgl, which you can cover comfortably by bus or taxi. Book your transfer with our partners, Alpentaxi Ischgl and Four Seasons Transfer, and you’ll arrive safely (you can pay directly in the taxi). Three airports are within easy reach of Salnerhof. Innsbruck is the nearest, about 100 kilometres away. Munich and Zurich offer more international connections and are each about 220 kilometres away. From there, you can continue your journey by hire car, shuttle, or taxi.

The drive to Ischgl deserves more than just a fleeting glance through the windscreen at the car in front.

Tip #1: Visnitz waterfall

Eight kilometres before Ischgl, near Kappl, water thunders thirty metres down bare rock. The Visnitz waterfall is loud, wild, and framed by dense mountain forest – a natural spectacle that’s certainly worth a stop on your way here during the warmer months. Planning tip: the circular walk is 6 kilometres long, so please allow plenty of time.

Tip #2: Entrance to the Ischgl valley, just before the village sign

Here, the Paznaun valley reveals all its splendour. The mountains frame the view of Ischgl; depending on the time of day, the light is either golden or dramatic. The moment when the anticipation reaches its peak: for a photo that you’ll still be looking at years from now. And as you do so, you’ll sigh: “Oh, what a lovely time we had at Salnerhof. We should go back there again. I wonder if they have any offers?” We do.
