Sights around Ischgl

Distance: 950 metres

The architecture alone is worth a visit: the Silvretta thermal baths nestle into the Ischgl landscape in terraced formations. Inside, there are 1,000 square metres of water, the panoramic sauna is one of the largest in Austria, and the heated outdoor pool on the roof combines mountain air with a warm sense of well-being. It’s just a five-minute walk from Salnerhof to this place where active days give way to deep relaxation.

Some lakes are just for taking pictures, but this one invites you to dip your feet in – at least up to your ankles. In the Fimbatal valley, accessible via the middle station of the Silvretta cable car, lies Lake Schwarzwassersee, nestled amidst coniferous woodland and tranquillity. The water shimmers so clearly that the peaks appear sharper in it than they do against the sky; there’s also a barbecue area on the shore and a circular walk through the greenery.

Distance: 4 kilometres

Seventy metres below your feet, the Fimbabach river rushes along, and an impressive 120 metres of steel and cable link the two rock faces above the Kitzloch gorge. The suspension bridge is part of the adventure trail between Ischgl and Idalp, and yes, this calls for a bit of courage. In return, the view rewards you with a view of the valley that you won’t forget in a hurry.

Distance: 3.5 kilometres

Two kilometres of cable, 50 metres of air beneath you, speeds of up to 85 kilometres per hour. Skyfly is a zipline that runs from the middle station of the Silvretta cable car through the Kitzloch gorge to the valley station of the Pardatschgrat cable car. The ride lasts three minutes, and during those three minutes something happens to the relationship between the heart and gravity. If you want to fly in pairs, use the parallel lines – as we all know, adrenaline is best shared.

Distance: 17 kilometres

In Kappl, the village next to Ischgl, there’s a place at 1,830 metres above sea level where children take the lead. The Sunny Mountain Adventure Park brings together a petting zoo and a low-rope course, a Kneipp facility and a fishing pond, disc golf and a circular walking trail that winds its way playfully through the flora and mountain landscape. Meanwhile, parents find time for a coffee while enjoying the view.

About a 90-minute drive from Ischgl, in Wattens near Innsbruck, a giant watches over 18 Chambers of Wonder. André Heller created this place; artists such as Keith Haring and Niki de Saint Phalle brought it to life. Here, crystals become art, light, a world that sparkles, confounds, and fascinates. The large garden, with its crystal cloud made up of 800,000 stones, is well worth a visit.

What would Ischgl be like today if, back in 1963, a handful of farmers from the Paznaun had shown a little less pioneering spirit? The small museum next to the village tunnel tells the story of Silvretta cable car, from the first reversible cable car to the modern Funitel system. Old gondolas, vintage skis, photographs from a time when Ischgl was still a hidden gem. Admission is free; it’s open on Wednesdays.
